Problem Statements
How might we create meaningful opportunities for teenagers and parents to engage in open communication, participate in stress-relieving and bonding activities, and provide a safe space where every family member feels heard and understood?
Many teenagers between ages 13 and 15 struggled with their family relationships during this stage of growing up. High expectations from parents, pressure from schoolwork, and the stress of managing time often weigh heavily on them. When communication at home is limited, these pressures can easily turn into misunderstandings and tension.
Teens might feel judged, unsupported, or that their opinions are not valued, which could lead to frustration and emotional distance from their families. From conducting user research through surveys, teenagers have shared on what they truly needed was not fewer expectations but more understanding and also to have someone to listen, to empathise, and guide them with patience.
Strengthening family support is vital for teens’ confidence, resilience, and overall mental well-being.
Audience from the Design Education Summit had a first-hand experience with the game prototype made by Team Vision Smiths.
The Castle of Connections is a family bonding board game created to help families communicate more openly, mend misunderstandings, and build stronger emotional ties.
At the heart of the game are communication prompts and hand-drawn cards, each symbolising different emotions and values such as strength, hope, empathy, and resilience. These drawings serve as bridges, giving players a safe way to express feelings that might otherwise be difficult to say out loud.
Alongside the cards, meaningful tokens like the dragonfly that represents lightness, freedom, and transformation, remind players of the importance of listening and supporting one another. The game is stress-free with no winners or losers. Success is measured in laughter, empathy, and honest sharing.
By combining play, reflection, and creative visuals, the Castle of Connections turns every round into an opportunity for families to repair cracks in their relationships, celebrate small victories, and grow closer together.
Student engaging audience at the Summit to share their thought process behind the project.
The Castle of Connections is not just a board game but an experience for families to bond, communicate, and support mental well-being. Unlike traditional games, it is simple, stressfree, and has no winners or losers. The focus is on creating a safe space where families can laugh, reflect, and share openly.
What sets this game apart is the meaning behind its design. Every card, icon, and token is hand-drawn, with each symbol representing values such as strength, hope, empathy, and resilience.
